Innovating
in Emergency Medicine, the state of Rio Grando do Sul boasts
the first medical residency program in this area, in addition
to having hosted the first Brazilian Emergency Medicine
Conference. These facts, according to Dr. Luiz Alexandre
Alegretti Borges, president of the Emergency Medicine Association
of Rio Grande do Sul (AMERS), are merely a sample of the
many high quality professionals services available in Rio
Grande do Sul. During the four days of this conference,
there will be ample opportunity to witness such professionalism
in action, not to mention the new ideas and techniques to
be revealed in the conference. In the interview below, Dr.
Alegretti comments on his expectations about the conference
and expresses his views on Emergency Medicine.

Interview
Dr. Luiz Alexandre Alegretti
President of the Emergency Medicine Association
of Rio Grande do Sul (AMERS)
Winfocus: Why a partnership
with the Congress?
Alegretti: This partnership is extremely important.
The conference deals specifically with the use of ultrasound for
critically ill patients. For AMERS, it will be very interesting
to follow the guidelines presented for the diagnosis of these
patients. The lectures and presentations will broaden the horizons
of doctors working in emergency departments in the state of Rio
Grande do Sul.
Winfocus:
How
will Porto Alegre benefit from this congress?
Alegretti: By hosting a conference of such caliber,
welcoming world-famous professionals, Porto Alegre will also receive
world-wide recognition. Our highlights include the first Brazilian
Medical Residency Program in Emergency Medicine (at the Hospital
de Pronto Socorro - HPS), and the fact that we held the first
Brazilian Conference on Emergency Medicine (in Gramado, in September
2007). Several US physicians attended this congress, and as a
result started to recognize and respect our work.
Winfocus:
How
will your organization benefit from this partnership?
Alegretti: AMERS associates will be able to attend
some of the courses for free, in addition to being granted discount
registrations.
Winfocus:
What
do you expect from this partnership?
Alegretti: Conferences are instrumental in promoting
the local culture and tourist industry. This time, in addition,
I believe the greatest benefit will be the contribution to emergency
medicine as a whole. Doctors will be encouraged to invest in their
own training, and more professionals will feel stimulated to seek
this medical specialty.
